point of view
This is a first person book. Someone occasionally steps in to make direct comments on the novel’s events. It is always good when you’re the narrator of the book and you also understand everything, knowing what will happen, and truly became apart of the novel. It gives the readers a deeply and detailed descriptions of all the characters and all the events. For an example, when the narrator introduce Gandalf, he said: “Gandalf! If you had heard only a quarter of what I have heard about him, and I have only heard very little of all there is to hear, you would be prepared for any sort of remarkable tale.” These words sounds like you’re talking to a real person in life, this gives the whole novel a chatty tone. The author seems like he put more efforts on Bilbo to have a tone of affection for Bilbo, even at his worst, the narrator sounds deeply sympathetic, and when Bilbo at his best, when he finally finished his mission, but Thorin died, the narrator keeps up a slightly condescending tone.
